What Does Telogen Effluvium (TE) Hair Loss Look Like? I'll Tell You

ItemTitle

Over the weekend, I received an email from a woman who asked me "what, exactly, does TE or telogen effluvium look like?"  I wrote back and asked her for a bit of clarification, but she meant what I thought and assumed that she had meant.  Basically, she wanted to know what the hair of a person with TE will look like and if there is any pattern or appearance to the hair or scalp that would indicate that the shedding or hair loss is due to TE rather than something else.  I will discuss these things in the following article.

A small white bulb at the end of a fallen hair is not, in itself reason for concern. It only indicates that the follicle has passed through the various phases of the growth cycle before the strand was shed. Although this is a normal process (even in the absence of any type of hair loss disorder), the white bulb is not usually noticed until, or unless shedding becomes excessive--prompting one to examine their fallen strands.

How to Layout Recessed Lighting

One of the most important principles to understand when designing a recessed lighting layout is beam angle. In recessed cans, the light is produced in the shape of a cone. You picture the light starting as a point at the light fixture and forming a circle on the floor. The beam angle is the angle of this light out of the bulb. For example a 60-degree beam angle will produce a circle of light about 9 feet across on the floor if the fixture is 8 feet off the floor. See a

If a disorder is suspected, an examination of the bulb can provide professionals with clues as to the type and cause of the disorder. The shape, size and color will determine which stage of the growth cycle the hair was in prior to falling out; and if any abnormalities are present.

Bulb

Hair Falling Out With a Little White Bulb at the End

The first phase of the cycle, the period of active growth, is called anagen. During this time the hair is firmly anchored, deeply within the follicle. Removing an anagen hair from a healthy scalp would require a firm, forcible pluck. The tip would reveal a small rounded or slightly elongated, pigmented bulb that may be surrounded by a gelatinous sac-like enclosure.

Hair Falling Out With a Little White Bulb at the End

No URL

After each individual hair has reached its full growth potential, the follicle moves into what is known as "catagen". Although catagen lasts only one to two weeks, many changes take place during this time that prepare for the formation of the white bulb. The lower follicle shrinks. The inner root sheath disappears. Pigmentation ceases. Cellular material (such as that of the outer root sheath) that is no longer needed to sustain growth, begins to migrate to base of the strand.

Once all catagen changes have occurred the follicle enters what is known as "telogen." In early telogen any remaining cells that are no longer needed migrate to the base of hair. Because pigmentation has ceased, these cells will be non-pigmented. These non-pigmented cells cluster together to form the "mysterious white bulb that acts as an anchor to hold the hair in the follicle while it "rests" for approximately three months before being released. The telogen phase is also referred to as the resting period.

Any hair that falls out with a white bulb attached indicates that it has cycled through the telogen phase before falling out. Because of the shape, these strands are also referred to as club hairs. This feature will be present in normal daily shedding. Unless shedding is excessive there is no reason for concern.

The most common condition that causes excessive shedding with a white bulb attached is telogen effluvium. Because any follicle at any stage of the growth cycle can be affected, fallen strands may be of various lengths.

With alopecia areata the hair is often shed during the telogen phase, but in some cases it can be shed during anagen or it can break off. The affected strands may have an "exclamation mark appearance." A small portion of the strand right at the scalp level becomes very thin giving the appearance of an exclamation point. Because the hair is very thin at this point it can also break off. Although the most common form of alopecia areata causes bald patches, there are other variations of this condition that cause other, more severe patterns of baldness.

The absence of a visible white bulb could indicate that the hair fell out during the anagen stage, such as in loose anagen syndrome or anagen effluvium. It could also indicate that it broke off rather than fell out.

The size, shape, color and condition of the bulb can provide valuable diagnosis information to the examining hair loss professional.

That is just one part of the formula. That circle of light we now have on the floor is not all the same intensity. About five and a half feet of that circle is good intense light while the remainder is spill over and diminishes as it gets further from the center. This is very important to understand. With this information, you can overlap the spill over light so that you end up with a nice even light pattern over the entire area you are trying to illuminate. Something to remember when you are planning this out is something called the work plane. This is an area about 30" above the floor. It is an area where most tasks take place.

Bulb

How to Layout Recessed Lighting

The work plane is important because as the distance between the light fixture and the surface to be lit decreases, so does that circle we spoke about. In a living room or den, designing the lighting plan so that we have even light on the floor is fine. In a kitchen though, this work plane becomes far more critical. This is why in a kitchen, keeping recessed lights about 4 feet apart, creates a pattern that is even on the work plane with the intense portion of the circle.

There are some other things besides the bulb and the can that shape the light pattern. The finish trim on recessed lights can vary the pattern of light. A wall washer creates a half cone that can be directed at a wall or fireplace. A pin spot trim can direct the light in a very narrow beam to light a small object.

This should give you a basic idea of what is involved when you undertake a recessed lighting layout. If you would like to learn more or have questions, please visit us at the links below.

If you happen to drive in the night and see a pair of blurry yellow colored headlights approaching from the opposite direction of the road then you have mostly likely encounter an old classic. Such headlights employ a century old tungsten filament technology that is less commonly used by today's auto manufacturers.

If you see an incoming bright blue/white headlamp, chances are it comes from a luxury Mercedes or BMW cruising past you at lightning speed. Such vehicles are factory fitted with HID or High Intensity Discharge lamps or better known as Xenon lights. Xenon headlamps are known to burn brighter than conventional headlamps given the same voltage/wattage consumption and therefore its popularity.

It is obvious that the bright blue/white light gives the driver better visibility while on the road and headlamp manufacturers have been quick to acknowledge the growing demand for such headlights. Many motorists have converted their headlamps by switching to xenon bulbs that can be self-installed easily. There are many brands and makes available in the market today simply by browsing through the internet.

Before you decide to switch, check your existing headlamps first. If your car is fitted with the original headlamps, the first thing you have to figure out is whether it is using separate bulbs for the dip beam and the high beam. There are also cars that use a single bulb for both the dip and high beam. A single bulb that can perform dip and high beam function has two filaments inside the bulb. When you switch on your headlamp, the dip beam filament will always remain lit and continues to remain lit even after the high beam is switched on. Headlamps that utilize a single bulb with two filaments are easily recognized when you take it out because it has a 3-pin connection.

On the other hand, a headlamp that uses separate high beam bulb has a single pin connection while its low beam counterpart has a two-pin connection.

Next, check the original manufacturer specification because there are other bulb manufacturers that do not conform to the above pin connection specification. However, you will find that almost 90% of auto bulb manufacturer conforms to the above pin specification.

Prior to the popularity of HID, many autos have switched from the traditional tungsten bulbs to Halogen. Although the functionality remains the same, Halogen gives off white light using thinner filament. The advantage of thinner filament is that it gives off brighter light. With thinner filament however, it tend to burns out easily and to overcome this problem, manufacturers have been able to increase its lifespan by incorporating halogen gas inside the filament, thus the name halogen bulb.

The continuous development in headlights technology has always focused on brighter and longer lasting bulbs that use the least amount of energy. The brightest bulb is not always the most useful because it produces glare that can temporarily blind drivers approaching form opposite direction of the road. Popularity of HID bulbs was due to its brightness and attractive blue/white lights produced. It is said to burn 3 times brighter and 10 times the lifespan of a Halogen bulb. However, be sure to fork out more for HID bulbs if you intend on investing in such headlights.

The latest headlamp technology is focusing on LED bulbs or Light Emitting Diodes. The advantage of LED over other existing bulbs is the much superior lifespan and durability. Its small size affords headlamp designers greater flexibility. It is well documented that many of the LED's produced in the 1970s and 1980s are still in operation today. The use of LED for tail lamps, brake lights and interior lighting has been quite common but limited for front headlight due to high cost factor of producing it to match natural daylight color.

ENERGY- Conductors and insulators.

Bulb

The Importance of Electricity

Energy is found everywhere (and I really mean everywhere). Well, you can't see energy, but it is around. Reading this article uses energy, too. Well, I won't be talking about contracting and expanding and all that stuff (find it in another article). I will be talking about conductors and insulators.

The Importance of Electricity

No URL

Ok. First, conductors of electricity mean that it attracts electricity. Insulators are exactly the opposite. Metal is a good conductor of electricity while plastic is an insulator.

Thomas A. Edison

Invention of the lightbulb

Now, electricity is...Whoops, actually, step 2 is: Who invented the lightbulb. There are many inventors in the world. Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning conductor. The Wright brothers invented the aeroplane. No, no, no. I am NOT concentrating on them. Thomas Alva Edison is a very famous inventor. He invented the lightbulb, and yes, that is the one I am looking for.

The lightbulb consists of the filament, which is for the bulb to light up. Correct, if the filament is taken away, then the bulb would not light up.

Now you know about electricity, you're going to learn how electricity is made. Number two... Oh, yes! The advantages and disadvantages of electricity.

How is electricity made?

Ha ha, I hear you say. Electricity can't be made. Well, almost correct. No, 0 percent correct.

Huh? Then how is electricity made? I'm sure you're asking that. You'll learn right now.

Electricity is a half-natural half-man-made thing. You might not know, but electricity is made from crude oil. That's the main 'ingredient'. Ha ha. Wrong again. That's the only ingredient. OK, I must give myself 10%/100%. Why? Well, it is simply because you don't cook electricity! Well, you want to know the answer? You BURN crude oil! Did you think of that?

Advantages and Disadvantages

I'm sure you know the advantages of electricity. They help many things to function. As I have mentioned earlier, Fans, light bulbs, televisions, ovens, air-conditioners and many other things cannot function without electricity.

But I don't think you know much about the disadvantages of electricity. As you know, electricity is made by burning crude oil. But crude oil is a limited resource. This means that it may run out in the future. If we don't use electricity wisely, there might not be any electricity in the future.

Another disadvantage is that because it is made by burning crude oil, it causes pollution to the environment, also at the same time increasing the speed of global.

Now after this article, I guess you wanted to save electricity and use it wisely. Well, you should, and prevent global warming in the future!

In that case, you're going to want some kind of dog house heater. People often want to know if it's possible to make one themselves. The answer is yes, you can make a homemade dog house heater, as long as you know enough to set up the electrical side of things safely. You will need to know a bit about wiring and the like to be able to make your own doghouse heater.

Bulb

Making a Homemade Dog House Heater

So how to make a dog house heater? Well, there's a particular kind of heater which is very straightforward in construction - the heater box. The basic principle is straightforward - the key part is simply a light bulb. If you've ever tried to change a light bulb which has just been switched on, you know how hot they get! So a single light bulb can be enough to keep a dog house toasty warm.

Making a Homemade Dog House Heater

No URL

You need to install it at the top of the dog house, so that your dog can get in and out without burning himself on it. Don't put it right at the top, though - you need a few inches of space from surrounding surfaces, or you'll have a fire hazard. So, drill a hole near the top of the wall, and run the cables out there to the power socket.

You need to be able to run them in a way that your dog can't get at them, because if he chews them, he's going to get a nasty shock. If your dog house is against a fence, you can run the cables straight through the fence. If not, you may need to cover them with a purpose-built casing, or bury them. You can get metal casing at hardware stores, but a bit of garden hose can also make a great casing, and there are other kinds of hard plastic tubing you can get at hardware stores which can work.

Back inside the dog house, you'll want to cover the bulb with something, or the light may stop your dog sleeping. An old paint can is a good option for this, or failing that a large food or coffee can. Strip off any paper covering, of course. Make a few small holes to let air out, and then attach the can, over the light bulb, to the wall. If you screw it on, then you can easily remove it when you need to change the bulb.

Alternatively, make a large hole in the bottom of the can, and fix the bottom of the can to the wall - in other words, setting up the light bulb inside the can. Then just put the lid on the can to cover the light.

If you like, you can paint the can black - that helps the heat radiate.

If you want to get really fancy, you can add a dimmer switch, so you can adjust the heat, or a thermostat, to control the temperature.

How Does Hair That Is Shedding Due To Telogen Effluvium Look?: Sometimes, there are changes in hair texture before the shedding actually starts.  That's because the effected hair moves into the resting stage and these strands are no longer deeply embedded in the scalp or being properly nourished.  So, the result is flyaway or unruly hair that doesn't quite lay down flat.

Bulb

What Does Telogen Effluvium (TE) Hair Loss Look Like? I'll Tell You

Once the shedding actually starts, you may not notice any changes of volume or any thinning spots at first.  Most people begin with much more hair than they think, so it takes a certain period of shedding before the changes are noticeable to others.  You may see spent or falling hair sort of hanging down at the ends and friends, coworkers, or complete strangers will pluck hair from your clothing (which can be quite embarrassing.) You may also see that your scalp is pink or red because so many follicles are being affected at once.

After a while, you might start to see some thinning in areas that aren't quite as thick to begin with like the bangs, temples, or crown.  Now, some people will panic and think that they have AGA or androgenic alopecia, but this isn't always the case.  Often those areas have less hair to begin with so they are going to thin out more quickly than other areas.  However, generally speaking (although there are very commonly exceptions,) people will TE will generally have overall or diffuse shedding and loss, while people with genetic loss will have patterned loss that is mostly limited to the top, temples, and crown.

Over time, it can be harder and harder to tell the difference between TE and AGA just by looking at the hair and scalp.  Because prolonged shedding is going to thin out your hair even if you're regrowing quite steadily.  Now, with telogen effluvium, the quality and quantity of your regrowth should not be adversely affected, unless you have some inflammation issues.  So, the regrowth that you do have should be relatively healthy and thick.  However, because something is making your hair continue to cycle through the resting phase, your regrowth may not have the impact that you might have hoped because the growth just can not keep up with the loss.

What's The Deal With The White Bulb? Does The White Bulb Mean That I Definitely Have Telogen Effluvium?: I'm asked the question so often. People really want the reassurance that this shedding might one day stop, so they are very hopeful that the white bulb on the end of the hair is indicative of temporary shedding. The truth is though, that almost all forms of hair loss have the white bulb.  The exception is if you actually pull your hair from your scalp.

But, hair that has reached the end of it's life cycle will fall out on it's on and that bulb is just where it's not embedded and nourished anymore.  If you pull out one of your hairs right now, you will see a brown sheath around the end. This is still a healthy and growing hair and that's the difference.  That hair did not meet a natural end.  But, your hair doesn't know why it is being forced into the resting phase.  It just knows that it's in this phase and it responds accordingly.

Now, if the bulb is sort of yellow and is large, that well may be sebum build up which, depending on how often you wash your hair, may be indicative of androgens adversely affecting and clogging your hair and scalp. It's pretty easy to tell the difference though because the sebum build up looks more like a plug and is much larger than the white end that most of us see.
